LMS Announces Second Generation of CALM SHOULDER SCREEN™
LMS Newsletter - Montreal, Quebec, April X, 2007 - LMS Medical Systems, a healthcare technology company and developer of the CALMTM clinical information system and risk management software tools for obstetrics, today announced that it has just released the second generation of its CALM Shoulder Screen risk management tool. The enhanced performance of this advanced version has been derived from data equivalent to the occurrence of shoulder dystocia with permanent injury in over 1.8 million deliveries.
Until recently, all attempts to develop a probabilistic model have been stymied by the challenge of collecting sufficient data on this relatively uncommon but devastating condition. After several years of clinical research, in 2006 LMS launched the first version of CALM Shoulder Screen to assess the risk of shoulder dystocia associated with immediate neonatal injury. The patent pending algorithm has now been refined to specifically assess the risk of one of the severest forms of these injuries, permanent brachial plexus injury, which is one of the top two most costly obstetrical litigation issues. This second generation tool can also be applied over a wider range of maternal and fetal sizes.
Shoulder dystocia occurs when the baby's shoulder gets stuck behind the mother's pubic bone during the delivery and can lead to potentially severe complications such as brachial plexus impairment, fractured clavicle, and brain damage. Until recently considered largely unpredictable and unpreventable, shoulder dystocia is responsible for some 30,000 delivery complications every year in North America.
